What is a Diamond Carat?

Alot of people ask - What is a Diamond Carat? -But it's probably the term people are most familiar with when it comes to diamond quality and price. However, what people don’t understand is its use in grading a diamonds value and quality. The word carat refers specifically to the weight of a diamond – not the size of a diamond. A one carat diamond is equivalent to 200 milligrams, which can be further divided into points with one point equal to 0.01 carats. If someone refers to a half carat diamond, it’s the same as 0.50 points/ 0.50 carats. The word actually originates from a combination of the Greek and Arabic names for 'carob tree' – which is Keration in Greek and Qirrat in Arabic.

Diamond Carat Weight Size Chart

This chart shows carat weights from 0.25 points and their size measurements in millimetres. Even though the price may rapidly increase with bigger carat weights, you’ll notice the size doesn’t The larger the carat weight the more valuable and rare a diamond will be. The average cost of a decent GIA certificated one carat diamond is anything from £6,000 to £10,000, so dividing a diamonds carat weight into points is always a more affordable option.
