The diamond clarity refers to the numbers of flaws or imperfections within the stone. It is extremely rare for a diamond to be entirely flawless; almost all diamonds include trace minerals or other miniscule characteristics. In the diamond industry, these imperfections are referred to as ‘inclusions’.
During a diamond classification, a gemmologist will inspect the stone using a magnification level of 10 times the naked eye. The diamond will be awarded a diamond clarity rating based on the type, position, size and number of inclusions in the diamond.

The rarest, and therefore the most expensive diamonds have a clarity rating of FL (Flawless) or IF (Internally Flawless).
Diamonds with a clarity rating of VVS1 or VVS2 are have excellent diamond clarity and are virtually flawless with only minute inclusions within the stone. It would be extremely difficult to view the inclusions in this quality of diamond even with 10 times magnification, and impossible to view with the naked eye. A diamond with the clarity grade of either VS1 or VS2 still possesses exceptional clarity. In VS1 graded brilliant cut diamonds, such as Round, Princess, Marquise and Pear, it is impossible to see inclusions with the naked eye.
And only a mere 1% of VS2 grade brilliant cut diamonds contain inclusions that it would be possible to spot with the naked eye. This makes it extremely unlikely that the presence of inclusions could either be seen, or in any way affect the visual beauty of the stone. It is worth bearing in mind that only GIA certified diamonds offer this reassurance due to the rigorously high standard of their grading criteria.
Due to the more open structure of step cut diamonds, such as the Emerald or Asscher cut, inclusions are easier to view. Bearing this in mind, we would recommend using diamonds of VS1 clarity grade or above for this category of diamond cut.
It is always advisable to choose a diamond without inclusions visible to the naked eye; the beauty of the diamond is therefore uncompromised. Due to the lower quality appearance of diamonds graded in the Included range of SI2 to I3, diamonds with a clarity rating of below SI1 (Slightly Included) are not offered on this site.
