Fancy Colour Diamonds

As well as the familiar ‘white diamond’ this precious stone also grows naturally in a spectrum of beautiful colours. These diamonds are called Fancy Colour Diamonds.

Natural Fancy Colour diamonds are rare and, as a result, are often extremely expensive to buy. It is estimated that out of 10,000 normal diamonds harvested, only one of them will be a Fancy Colour diamond.

The most popular Fancy Colour diamond is Yellow. Other colours, such as Green, Pink, Blue, Red and Orange can be extremely expensive. Intense Red and Orange Diamonds are the most expensive. For example, you can expect to pay in the region of £1,500,000 for a 1ct Intense Red diamond, if you can find one.

Fancy Colour Diamond Grading

The colour of a Fancy Colour diamond is measured differently to a normal diamond Colour. The grading scale is based on the intensity of the colour. The GIA Fancy Colour grading scale is: Faint, Very Light, Light, Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, Fancy Vivid, Fancy Deep and Fancy Dark.
