The Mogul Emerald is one of the world’s largest emeralds dating back to 1695. The emerald stone is an impressive 10cm tall and weighs 217.80 carats. This beautiful green stone is thought to have come from the reign of Emperor Aurangzeb who was the last of the great Mogul rulers who controlled much of India. The Emerald is thought to have been discovered in Colombia by the Spanish conquistadors and cut in India into a rectangular shape with flat sides. One side of the stone is inscribed with Islamic prayers and the other is engraved with opulent flower ornaments. The Islamic prayer contains the 12 names of Imams in the chronological order in which they succeeded one another. The reverse side reflects the Mogul love of nature with its floral and foliate carved decorations. In 2001 the stone was sold at Christie’s Auction House in London to an anonymous buyer for $2.2 million.
