Although the classic solitaire round brilliant cut and princess cut diamond engagement ring remain a popular choice for brides to be, we have noticed vintage diamond cuts are making a comeback. The most popular vintage diamond cuts are the two step cuts – Asscher and Emerald cut diamonds, cushion cut and marquise shaped diamond.
The Asscher Cut
The Asscher cut was developed in the early 20th century by the Asscher brothers of Holland, at the height of the Art Deco period. The diamond is a square step cut with square corners, designed to make a dramatic look for engagement rings.
The Emerald Cut Diamond
Originally cut for emerald stones, the cut is similar to the Asscher cut. Due to its long lines and rectangular shape, the emerald cut diamond looks absolutely stunning set in engagement rings. The cut is less fiery than a round brilliant and princess cut, but shows more dramatic flashes of light.
Cushion Cut Diamond
The cushion cut, is a popular antique cut that resembles a cross between the old mine cut, a modern oval cut and the shape of a pillow. The cut has a classic romantic look that makes it stand out from the rest.
Marquise Cut Diamond
The marquise diamond is a vintage cut, with a great history. The shape of the diamond resembles a boat with its pointed corners. Apparently the diamond was commissioned by King Louis XV of France, who wanted a diamond shaped like his mistresses mouth. The shape was developed throughout the 20th century and has become a popular brilliant cut diamond.
