We all know that searching for the perfect engagement ring is not an easy decision and can take some time; but would you spend 6 months out in freezing Scottish rivers searching for the gold yourself? John Greenwood 46, from Crieff, Perthshire took on the challenge to search for gold to make his future wife to be the perfect engagement ring with the most unique story behind it. He set out on a quest braving icy rivers and strong winds collecting thousands of tinny specks of gold – enough for a jeweller to cast into an engagement ring. John said – ‘I’ve been incredibly lucky to find so much gold to make a ring, but I was out there every weekend and in the evenings before it got dark in freezing cold water. I certainly put a lot of effort in.’ In total John collected 34 grammes of gold worth nearly £12,000. John said he used a simple gold pan, shovel, rake and trowel to collect any gold he could.

Scottish gold in its natural form has a high gold purity of 22+ carats with the highest purity of gold at 24 carats. The engagement ring has its own special unique hallmark engraved ‘Scottish gold’ John even said he has enough gold left to make into a wedding ring.
