The Classic Beauty of the Emerald Cut Diamond
In today’s post, we’re going to look at the beautiful, classic emerald cut diamond
and why it’s always been a popular choice for diamond engagement rings
, diamond wedding rings
and other diamond set jewels. The cut of the emerald diamond is also called the ‘step cut’ – mainly due to the fact that when you view it from above the diamond resembles steps. These diamonds have a bright, shiny and clear appearance and although they are not as fiery as brilliant cut diamonds, their fine long lines, give out dramatic flashes of light.
What Makes a Good Emerald Cut Diamond
If you want to get the most out of an emerald cut diamond, there are a few factors that affect its quality. These are things like the width and depth of the stone, the symmetry and alignment of the diamonds facets, the polish of the diamond, the clarity and the colour of the diamond. A good length to width ratio is between 1.30 and 1.50 with 1.40 considered “ideal”. Clarity is extremely important as any marks or blemishes are a lot more visible within the diamonds large open facets – grades VS2 and above are a good option. Any flaws might also affect the diamonds brilliance, as they will interfere with the light passage passing through and reflecting back off the stone. For engagement rings this is a great option for women with short fingers as its rectangular shape will help elongate them.
