From Yes to I do – Susie and Simon’s Engagement
This month we will tell you the adorable story behind a lovely engagement. Meet Simon – chartered surveyor from Newcastle upon Tyne and his fiance Susie – a fashion product developer from Milton Keynes. Simon and Susie met at a birthday party in university, through an old childhood friend of hers. Here is their heart-warming story:
“She always tells me that she was interested in me from the first time we met in 2009… Along with a number of drunken friends, I performed a striptease for the birthday girl, not my finest hour… It should have completely put her off, but thankfully it didn’t!” remembers Simon. They met occasionally over the next few years, but Susie always had a boyfriend so they simply got to know each other as friends.
“In 2012 we were both invited to a party at our mutual friend’s house and I was told that Susie was finally single! I attempted to impress her, ask for her phone number and invite her to Manchester for a weekend. Thankfully it seemed to work and the day after the party we had our “first date” in a motorway services KFC with major hangovers! I invited Susie to stay in Manchester for the weekend and I arranged a romantic meal in the city centre and bought tickets for Cirque du Soleil. All was going well until I realised that I had booked the wrong tickets and the show was actually the weekend after… I felt like a real idiot but it did mean that Susie agreed to travel up the next weekend as well!”
Two years after their first date, Simon and Susie moved in together in Manchester. Another two years later, Simon decided it was time to ask the big question. Before planning anything, Simon asked Susie’s father for her hand. When his future father in law said Yes, Simon began researching engagement ring retailers and prices.
“Susie has admired the jewellery on Steven Stone window ever since we moved here, so I knew it would be where I went to first when considering buying an engagement ring. I first visited in January 2016 to get some advice on how much a ring costs so that I knew how much I would have to save. I was totally clueless about everything, so the assistance and expertise of the team was invaluable. They talked me through the different shapes, designs and the costs associated with them. Armed with this information I was able to put plans in place to start saving and researching the style of ring Susie would like.”
Simon came up with a few sketches of unique engagement ring designs. He met with Steven Stone’s managing director to discuss our bespoke engagement ring process. We worked with Simon to find the perfect diamond and from that stone, we build the CAD. Once we gained Simon’s approval, we created the engagement ring from a scratch.
“I sat with Max Stone and we discussed and settled on the sort of design that would suit Susie and her personality and would fit into my budget. Throughout this appointment I was so impressed by the level of knowledge and enthusiasm. I left Max to create CAD designs based on our discussions and I had them back within a week. It looked brilliant, however there were some tweaks I wanted to make and also I requested designs showing different metals and inclusion of coloured stones. Max was brilliant and very patient with me which was great ,as I never felt I was under pressure to buy. From start to finish the process of choosing/designing the ring was enjoyable and surprisingly relaxing. I think this was totally down to the excellent customer service and the lack of pressure on me to make a sale. In fact, during the stone buying process I was advised on certain attributes to look for to reduce the final price without compromising on quality or size.”
London has always been one of Susie’s favourite places and Simon knew he had to propose there. The proposal was a secret, so Simon arranged a friend to invite them to a party, so their trip to the capital doesn’t raise any suspicion.
“In reality I had arranged for us to stay at the Savoy, have lunch, drinks, be given a tour of their Royal Suite and take Susie to see her favourite musical, Les Miserables. I proposed in the Royal Suite and we had the most memorable and luxurious weekend of our lives. Susie was taken completely by surprise and the moment I got down on one knee she started crying. She thankfully said yes and I presented her with the amazing ring created by Max. Even 3 weeks on she cannot stop looking at it and she gets so many compliments on its unique design.”
“We plan to marry summer 2018 on Susie’s family farm with close family and friends and we cannot wait. No ideas about honeymoon as yet, but I am sure Susie will insist on somewhere hot, quiet and relaxing! After that, who knows what the future will hold. It has been a fantastic 5 years so far, and we are both looking forward to spending the rest of our lives together.”
Congratulations on your engagement! Steven Stone wishes you all the best and a lifetime of love!
