1. Decide your budget – First and foremost before anything you need to decide how much you want to spend on the ring. Traditionally two months salary is the average people are willing to spend, but it all comes down to how much you can afford. 2. What Metal? - As the ring will be worn everyday it’s important to select one of the popular precious metals like platinum, white gold, yellow gold or rose gold. For inspiration take a look at the colour metal jewellery she wears now. Each metal has different characteristics, and generally platinum is more expensive as it’s a pure metal. Whereas white gold is an alloy of yellow gold and other metals. Its price depends of the amount of gold used, which can be 9ct, 14ct, 18ct. For engagement rings we always recommend 18ct gold, as it’s stronger and a lot more hard wearing. Check out our metal comparison guide to help you further. 3. Diamond Shape – This is extremely important, as you don’t want to get the diamond shape wrong. There's a total of nine diamond shapes with different cuts, which are – round brilliant cut, princess cut, oval shaped, marquise shaped, pear shaped, heart shaped, emerald cut, Asscher cut, cushion cut and radiant cut. The classic of them all is the round brilliant cut and the stunning square shape of the princess cut. 4. Diamond Grading Details – this is the technical part of buying a diamond engagement ring. You basically need to know about the four Cs of a diamond – colour, cut, clarity and carat weight. A diamond is graded D to Z, with D being the most expensive and whitest in colour, further down the scale diamonds will have visible tints of yellow. We recommend colour grades from D to J. Diamond clarity is also very important, as the stone is graded by the amount of marks or inclusions it may have. The grade FL is the most rarest and expensive, as the diamond is completely flawless. The scale continues down to IF – VVS1 – VVS2 – VS1- VS2 and SI1. So the further down the scale the more the diamond will be included and the less expensive it will be. The diamond cut determines how much sparkle it has by the amount of light the stone reflects. With carat weight most diamond for engagement rings are just under the desired one carat mark. Diamond carat weight is used to describe the weight of the stone, with one carat equal to 200 milligrams, which can be further divided into 100 points. So a 0.50ct diamond is the same as 0.50 points and half a carat. 5. Only Buy a Certificated Diamond for the Ring – this is extremely important as it’s the only way of proving the quality and grades of the stone. You should only buy stones that are independently certificated by a diamond grading laboroty like GIA update `wp_posts` set `post_content` = Gemmological Institute of America). 6. The Style – the most common styles for engagement rings is the solitaire where the diamond is set singularly, a three stone or a ring with smaller diamonds set on the shoulders. The best thing to do is to browse online at various styles of engagement ring settings or look at your partners style of jewellery to get inspiration. 7 . Buying Online Could Save You £ - like a lot of expensive stuff, you can save money buying an engagement ring online. However if you do find an online jewellers make sure the following applies to them – They sell certificated diamonds update `wp_posts` set `post_content` = preferably GIA certificated) and they are well established and respected. 8. Read Customer Reviews - once you have decided n the ring you want and found the place to buy is, read customer reviews before you part with you cash.
