A Record Breaking Emerald-cut Fancy Intense Pink Diamond
Diamonds are the most precious stone, which take millions of years to form under truly remarkable conditions. Some of the world’s rarest diamonds are fancy intense coloured diamonds, and this emerald cut fancy intense pink diamond is no exception. This extremely rare emerald cut pink diamond sold at auction last year for £28.8 million. The 24.78-carat precious stone, set between two shield-shaped diamond shoulders, is classed as ‘potentially flawless’ and was bought by British billionaire Laurence Graff for his own private collection, who said ‘It is the most fabulous diamond I’ve seen in the history of my career and I’m delighted to have bought it.’ When the diamond sold at auction it had high expectations even before the bidding started at a first bid of £12.65 million but quickly rose to £28.8 million. The diamond’s previous owner was the late Harry Winston, US jeweller to the stars.
World Record for Pink Diamond Sales
The stone’s sale has set a new record, breaking the price of £15.39 million set by rival auctioneers Christies two years ago for a blue, 35.56-carat Wittelsbach-Graff diamond. After the sale chairman of Sotheby's Auction House David Bennett stated ‘Tonight’s spectacular result demonstrates that truly extraordinary objects will bring truly extraordinary prices. It was simply one of the most desirable diamonds I have seen during my 35-year-career at Sotheby’s.’
