What do we know about Turquoise?
Consisting of a hydrated phosphate of copper and aluminium that emodies the glistening blue-green colours of the ocean, turquoise is one of the most beautiful gemstones.
It’s also one of the first ever gemstones to be mined and has long been prized for its intense and desirable colour. Though it’s a widely available stone, it’s rarely found in its pure, natural form.
What’s the history of Turquoise?
One of the earliest known turquoise-producing regions is Persia, where historians believe the stone to have been mined for around 4,000 years.
Due to its beautiful blue colour, early Persians believed that turquoise represented the heavens and used it to cover the domes of palaces and places of worship.
The earliest evidence of the historic gemstone being used in both jewellery and ornaments comes from Egypt, where turquoise jewellery was found in royal burials as far back as 6,000 years ago.
What does Turquoise symbolise?
In recent years, turquoise has been seen as a symbol of love and is considered a pledge of affection when received as a gift.
Symbolising good fortune and success, the stone is believed to relax the mind and protect its wearer from harm. Turquoise rings, in particular, are thought to keep away evil spirits.
A great deal of turquoise symbolism and lore involves predicting danger. Some believe that the turquoise stone has the power to warn their wearer of danger and does so by breaking – it can also warn its wearer of impending illness, by changing colour.
