The 52.58 Carat Golconda Diamond Sells for $10.9 Million

This week Christies hosted its last sale of the year at their New York auction house. The star of the sale was a stunning 52.58 carat flawless emerald cut diamond – known as the Golconda diamond. The impressive stone had high expectations when it hit the hammer at auction reaching a high $10.9 million. The step cut diamond has a D colour and an internally flawless clarity grade. Before the sale the diamonds estimate sale price was between $9.5 million to $12.5 million – so the sale price came in between its estimations. The Golconda mines in India where the diamond came from is known for producing some of the world’s most famous gems – including the Hope Diamond and the Regent Diamond. Other highlights of the auction included this stunning pair of diamond drop earrings which feature a 10.31ct and a 9.94 carat pair of pear shaped diamonds. The earrings sold for $2.3 million to an anonymous buyer.
