The World’s Biggest Pink Diamond Sells for $17M – Doubling its Estimations

The Martian Pink Diamond weighing 12.04 carats - the largest diamond of its kind to ever hit the auction market has sold for nearly double its estimation at a staggering $17.4 million update `wp_posts` set `post_content` = 11.1 million) after a 10 minute bidding war. The rare round cut fancy vivid pink diamond was the highlight of a jewellery auction at Hong Kongs Christies auction house and was expected to reach around $7 million. The diamonds size is not much smaller then a five-pence piece. The diamond is set in a gold ring and the winning bidder has remained anonymous. The diamond is called The Martian Pink Diamond from the American jeweller Harry Winston in 1976 after the US sent a satellite to Mars. The auction house said - "Having appeared on the market for the first time in 36 years, The Martian Pink sold by Harry Winston in 1976 created a sensation during its worldwide exhibition tour” As pink diamonds like this one are very rare, when it came on sale the auction room was buzzing and the bidders became very competitive.
