What is a Princess Cut Diamond?

The Princess Cut is one of the most popular diamond shapes and looks like a square version of the brilliant round cut. The design itself is similar to an inverted pyramid and when placed into the ring’s setting the diamond’s square appearance features clean, straight sides that helps create greater light dispersal, making it really shine. The cut itself doesn’t actually refer to the shape of the diamond, but rather the proportions, symmetry and ultimately how it looks from above. These factors all play a key part in the diamond’s brilliance and light dispersal, with rankings ranging from poor to excellent. However, at Steven Stone we only offer the top three grades: good, very good and excellent. In terms of origins, the princess cut is only a few decades old as the diamond style that we know and love today originated in 1979. The princess cut has a striking similarity to the round brilliant diamond and with 49 facets, the style can often be less expensive than others, without compromising on the magnificent sparkle. An example of a princess cut diamond ring An example of a princess cut diamond ring The main reason that a princess cut may be cheaper than a round brilliant, is due to the fact that less of the rough diamond is wasted during the cutting process. A round diamond may only use as little as 40 to 50 percent of a rough stone, while the pyramid shape of the princess cut ensures that there is a lot less waste. If you have your heart set on a beautiful princess cut diamond, then the next step is finding the perfect ring to adorn it. This style is versatile and whether you’re looking for the elegant classic solitaire ring or you want to add extra sparkle with a three-stone ring, the princess cut will be the perfect complement to any style. Combining a modern and fresh look with the shine of a brilliant diamond help this cut live up to its name. Whether they’re set in an engagement ring, necklace or earrings, the stone never fails to make any piece look truly regal. While the classic round brilliant cut is typically the most popular diamond type, we find that the princess cut is a very close second. However, just because these are popular doesn’t mean it is right for you. There are plenty of other diamond cuts including emerald, cushion and heart, so finding the perfect stone to sit atop your ring depends on your and your loved ones personal preference.
