Akoya Pearls

Pearls are an exquisite natural gem that can be found in a variety of different colours. Discover all you need to know about akoya pearls in our detailed education section.

Akoya Pearls

The Akoya pearl variety was the first to be cultured to achieve perfectly spherical shape. Akoya pearls were cultivated in the waters of Japan by Kokichi Mikimoto, who harvested the first spherical pearl in 1905. Nowadays, most of Akoya pearls originate from Japan, however small portions are exported from China, Thailand and Australia. Akoya pearl colour range varies from white and cream to pink, green, silver and rarely, blue.
