Blue Sapphires are the most popular gemstone choice for engagement rings, wedding rings and bridal jewellery
The blue sapphire is an extremely desirable gemstone due to its vibrant colour, durability and hardness. It symbolises loyalty, hence why the stone is so popular for engagement rings, wedding rings and bridal jewellery.
Sapphires are known as “the gem of truth” and their name comes from the Greek word sappheiros – meaning ‘blue stone’. Their colour scale ranges from a light, pale blue to a deep royal blue, depending on the quality of the stone.
Like with most coloured gems, the colour is graded by its hue, tones and saturation levels. The blue sapphire’s hue refers to the colour, saturation to the brightness and tone to the actual scale lightness to darkness of the colour within the stone. Natural secondary colours develop when the sapphire is formed, with many gems including tints of green, purple and violet.
